Senator GORTON (Victoria) (Minister for Works and Minister in Charge of Commonwealth Activities in Education and Research) . - We cannot put gold into the ore and we cannot prevail upon the people to mine the ore and bring it into the batteries. I think that the richness of the ore has declined, and also many of the people who, perhaps, previously made their full living from fossicking now make their living from something else and do not bring in as much gold as they did before. The Auditor-General's report indicates that the future of the battery is under discussion.

Proposed expenditure noted.
