Senator PALTRIDGE - The answers to the honorable senator's questions are as follows -

1.   No funds have been provided for a survey ofa possible railway link between Whyalla and Port Augusta.

2.   The construction of a railway link between Whyalla and the Commonwealth Railways system at Port Augusta does not appear to be economically justified at the present time. However, the Premier of South Australia was informed recently that if and when it can be demonstrated to the satisfaction of the Commonwealth that sufficient traffic is likely tobe available to support economic operation of a railway between Port Augusta and Whyalla, the Commonwealth will consider arranging for the construction and operation of the line by the Commonwealth Railways Commissioner.
