Senator KEANE - The Treasurer has supplied the following answers: - 1.Yes. As pointed out in a previous reply, however, the prices refer to a specific quality of goods.

2.   The average rent figure used for the purpose of the index is purely a relative figure, and includes four and five roomed houses of all qualities, as derived for all towns from the 1933 censusreturns. This basic level has been varied since that date in accordance with the behaviour of a representative sample of these houses in each of the towns covered by the index.

3.   The average rent published by the Commonwealth Statistician does in fact show the relative cost of house rent from time to time.
