Senator CAMERON (VICTORIA) (Minister for Aircraft Production) - The Minister for Civil Aviation has supplied the following answers : -

1.   D.H.80 "DragonRapide'' aircraft.

2.   The aircraft was constructed in 1936.

3.   The aircraft normally operates on two engines at a maximum all-up weight of 5,300 lbs. For flights over water the maximum all-up loading is limited to 5,100 lbs., which, with full fuel and oil tanks, permits of a commercial load of 1,124 lbs. Recent tests have shown that the aircraft can maintain level flight on one engine at this loading.

4.   There is no justification for reducing maximum authorized load.

5.   Progressively with age, but if there is any evidence of reduction in performance (which could be due to many causes), the department endeavours to determine the cause of such reduction and, unless it can be eliminated, does reduce the authorized loading as necessary to secure safety. As indicated in the reply to question 3, flight tests were conducted on this aircraft and loading limited in the lights of such tests.
