Senator ASHLEY (NEW SOUTH WALES) (Minister for Information) - The Minister for Labour and National Service has furnished the following answer : -

1.   and 2. The Central Reference Board (Coalmining Industry) of which Judge DrakeBrockman is chairman has made awards relating to the wages of wheelers at the Millfield-Greta colliery and of wheeler-packers at the Stanford Main No. 2 colliery. Under these awards, employees at either colliery performing the same work would be paid the same rate of pay. At the Millfield-Greta colliery wheelers may be employed and paid the wheelers' rate, which is to-day 23s. l0d. per shift. If required to perform duties of a first-class shift man or any higher duties they must be paid the rate appropriate to first-class shift men, namely, 27s. 6d. or the appropriate higher duties rate, namely, 31s. 4d. With regard to Stanford Main No. 2, provision is made for a wheeler-packer to wheel from the rope-scraper-loader. This employee performs general duties, including first-class shift work, and must be paid the award rate appropriate to first-class shift men. This rate is to-day 27s. 6d. per shift.
