Senator FRASER (WESTERN AUSTRALIA) - The Minister for the Army has supplied the following answers : -

1.   No. Universal service personnel are allotted to units only when they are made available by national service officers, who, under the instructions of the Director-General of Man-power, determine whether they should be retained in industry or made available for military service.

2.   Sec answer to' 1 . The war establishment of each unit of the type mentioned includes carpenters.

3.   Personnel entering general details depots prior to allotment to units are trade tested, and continuous supervision is maintained to ensure that personnel are employed in their trade capacities. This does not exempt them from ordinary military training, but in their cases routine is reduced to the minimum. Some personnel with trade qualifications have withheld ' information of their qualifications, and others have attempted to avoid passing trade tests, but every effort is being made to ensure that men are posted to duties for which they are fitted by their civil training.
