Senator FOLL - The Minister for the Army has supplied the following answers :- -

1.   No. There is a serious shortage of trained artisans available for Australian Military Forces units and any man with recognized trade qualifications is assured of an appointment commensurate with his ability. It is pointed out, however, that .both in the Australian Military Forces and the Australian Imperial Force, tradesmen have failed to disclose their qualifications upon enlistment, in which case, naturally, they are not employed at their trades. Any man in such a situation who applies for and passes a trade test can be absorbed at his trade.

2.   In the case of skilled trades for which there is no provision in army establishments, such a member would be released .promptly provided his special qualifications placed hint within the list of reserved occupations or if his services could be .better utilized in munitions production.
