Senator E B JOHNSTON (WESTERN AUSTRALIA) - I ask the Leader of the Senate the following questions with reference to his attack on the press yesterday: -

1   . Under what sectionof the Constitution does the Minister claim the power to control or censor the Australian press?

2.   Is it the Minister's intention to have the proposed control or censorship of the Australian press conducted by the Australian Book Censors, or will a new department be established for the purpose?

3.   If, as suggested by the Minister, the Aus tralian press is to be compelled to publish speeches by Ministers and members, which competent journalists at present regard asof insufficient public interest to mention, does the Government intend to pay for the space occupied at advertising rates?

4.   Will the Minister refrain from exercising the proposed control or censorship over the Australian press until the electors have had an opportunity to pass judgment - or sentence of death - on this proposed limitation of the freedom of the Australia press?
