Senator DEIN (New South Wales) . - Although we have been informed by the Minister (Senator A. J. McLachlan) that the widow of a returned soldier may marry a worthless man, who might deprive the children of their pension, we have to remember that she may marry an honorable man, who may not be able to undertake the financial responsibility of maintaining the children if they were deprived of the pension. Senator Herbert Hays suggested that the money to which children would be entitled should be paid into a trust fund, but the object of this legislation is to assist the children during a period of their lives when it will be of the greatest benefit to them. If the money be paid into a trust account, it may not be made available to the children at a time when they need it. It is unfair to penalize children simply because the mother undertakes the responsibility of remarrying. I support the amendment.
