Senator E B JOHNSTON (Western Australia) . - We are asked to vote £3,350 for the remission of taxes, including sales tax. I have mentioned an instance in which a legitimate and deserving claim for remission of sales tax was not acceded to. I should like to know to whom refunds are made.

Senator Sir George Pearce - They are made to those who can establish their claim under the principles that I have mentioned.

Senator E B JOHNSTON - Would not the establishment of a new industry justify a refund?

Senator Sir GEORGE PEARCE (WESTERN AUSTRALIA) - I could not say. The honorable senator should make representations to the Treasurer.

Senator E B JOHNSTON - Last year the sum of £6,358 was expended under this item.

The CHAIRMAN - That was expended under last year's appropriation, and may not now be discussed.

Senator Sir George Pearce - The honorable senator will find the information that he seeks in the report of the Commissioner of Taxation.
