Senator BROWN (QUEENSLAND) asked the Minister representing the Minister for the Interior, upon notice -

1.   Has the exclusion of Mrs. Freer any political significance?

2.   Was she excluded on moral grounds?

3.   How many people have been excluded from Australia for similar reasons to those for which Mrs. Freer was excluded, during the last five years?


Senator Sir GEORGE PEARCE - The Minister for the Interior has supplied the following answers: -

1.   No.

2.   Attention is invited to a statement made by the Minister for the Interior yesterday in another place.

3.   The number of persons excluded from Australia fur similar reasons to those for which Mrs. Freer was excluded, namely, failure to pass the dictation test imposed under section 3. paragraph (a), of the Immigration Act, was 34.
