Senator BROWN - Can the Leader of the Senate state whether the Prime Minister, just prior to the last election, made the following statement: -

The return of the Ministry will mean a continuation of reproductive works such as the unification of railway gauges.

How many miles of railway line have been constructed following upon this promise ?


Senator Sir GEORGE PEARCE - I daresay the Prime Minister did make the statement. In spite of considerable opposition, the Commonwealth Government, 'by arrangement with the State Government concerned, is engaged upon the construction of a most useful link in. the standardized railway system, namely, that between Port Augusta and Port Pirie.
