Senator ALLAN MACDONALD (WESTERN AUSTRALIA) . - A sum is provided for the erection of a National Library at Canberra. I understand that it is intended to build up a collection of mementoes and souvenirs showing dif ferent phases of Australia's history, and industrial development, and that already a. souveniT of the troublous times during the shearers' strike in the early 'nineties, in the form of a policeman's baton suitably inscribed with gold lettering, has been donated. In view of the industrial peace which now exists throughout the Commonwealth, due largely to the present Government's progressive policy, I should like to know if the baton is to be kept as a reminder of the more strenuous times in 1892.

Senator Collings - Surely it is an historic memento.

Senator A J McLACHLAN (SOUTH AUSTRALIA) - It could scarcely come under the heading "New Works ".
