Senator ALLAN MACDONALD (WESTERN AUSTRALIA) asked the Minister representing the Minister for the Interior, upon notice -

1.   Towards speeding up the Trans-Australian railway services, has the CommonwealthRailway Department investigated fully the practicability of replacing the present steam locomotives with up-to-date stream-lined diesel locomotives?

2.   If so, could particulars of such investigations be furnished, showing the advantages of adopting these modern types of locomotives on the East-West route?

Senator Sir GEORGEPEARCE.The Minister for the Interior states that inquiries are being made, and the honorable senator will be advised of the result as soon as possible.
