Senator A J McLACHLAN (SOUTH AUSTRALIA) - I am not aware that there has been any wilful destruction of trees along that highway. The policy of my predecessorhas been continued by myself, and, in addition, following representations from members of the State Parliament and others, instructions were issued recently that no trees were to be removed unless this was absolutely essential for the efficient . working of the telegraphic and telephonic services. Furthermore, local governing bodies are to be consulted before any trees are felled. We have had repeated representa tions on this subject, and I am informed that any alleged destruction of trees has been caused, not by the Postal Department, but by some other department outside my control.
