Senator MILLEN (Tasmania) . -Honorable senators were staggered by the figures quoted by Senator Hardy in relation to the protection afforded to the Australian cement-making industry, and particularly his statement that freight from the United Kingdom is 27s.10d. a ton. Every honorable senator knows that a single consignment of coal has been carried to Australia at 13s. 3d. a ton, and that on larger consignments a much lower rate could be obtained. That being so, the honorable senator's figures are ridiculous, and his deductions absurd.
