Senator THOMPSON (Queensland) . - I shall not support Senator Payne's request, but I will support a request to make the fixed rates of duty under the British preferential tariff on cotton socks, 4s.; woollen . socks, 6s.; and silk socks 5s. That would give a benefit to the Mother Country and at the same time sufficiently protect the local manufacturers.


Senator Chapman - I proposed to make the rate on cotton socks, 3s., British.


Senator THOMPSON - I think that would be going too far.
