Senator CRAWFORD (Queensland) (Honorary Minister) . - Under the present reciprocal arrangement with New Zealand six months' notice has to be given of any alteration in duty. Some time ago the New Zealand Government increased the duties on wheat and flour, but they could not come into operation against Australian wheat or flour for six months except with the consent of the Commonwealth .Government. That consent, when sought, was readily given. When the New Zealand Government was requested by the Commonwealth Government to consent to increased duties operating against New Zealand butter without the requisite six months' notice, I regret to say that it would not give its consent. However, the required notice has been given, and at the end of six months. the new rates of duty on butter will operate against New Zealand.
