Senator Sir WILLIAM GLASGOW (Queensland) (Minister for Defence) [4.48]. - In reply to the point raised by the Leader of the Opposition (Senator Needham) I may say that the salary at, present paid to Mr. Shepherd was fixed bya previous government at £2,000a year, on the condition that it would be continued when he returned to Australia on the termination of his association with the High Commissioner's office in Lon don. The salary paid to the present secretary of the department is nol regarded as permanent. Any future occupant of that office may not receive a similar salary. The Public Service Board does not fix the salaries paid to the heads of departments.
