Senator OGDEN (through Senator Sampson) asked the Leader of the Government in the Senate, upon notice -

Whether any consideration has been given by the Government to the question of assisting in the development of the fishing industry?

Senator Sir GEORGE PEARCE - Yes. On the recommendation of the Development and Migration Commission, the Government convened a conference which was held in Melbourne on the 16th to 20th September last to discuss the development of the fishing and allied industries in Australia. Representatives of all the States other than Western Australia attended, together with representatives of the Development and Migration Commission and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research. The question of the development of Australian fisheries was exhaustively discussed and several committees were appointed to inquire into various phases of the industry. At a later date the conference will be again assembled, when the reports of the committees will be considered with a view to the submission of recommendations to the Commonwealth and State Governments in regard to the further development of the fishing and allied industries.
