Senator CHAPMAN asked the Minister representing the Minister for Health, upon notice -

1.   Is it correct that the Commonwealth Government has decided to favour a Belgian firm with a large order for radium?

2.   Is it correct that a companyoperating in South Australia - the Australian Radium Corporation - asked that its preparedness to fill any order should be placed before Cabinet?

3.   Is it correct that the company has had no opportunity of putting in a competitive tender ?


Senator McLACHLAN - The Minister for Health has supplied the following answers to the honorable senator's questions : -

1.   Radiumhas been purchased from a Belgian firm.

2.   The Australian Radium Corporation submitted representations as to its preparedness to supply radium.

3.   It was not considered desirable to call for competitive tenders.
