Senator NEEDHAM (Western Australia) .- I. shall be glad if the Minister will explain the reason for the manner in which the vote is presented. The provision asked for in this financial year is £4,076,000, and the amount appropriated under Loan Act No. 1, 1927, is £1,115,350.

Senator Sir William Glasgow - The latter sum has already been appropriated.

Senator NEEDHAM - Then the amount to be appropriated under this bill is £2,960,650. I notice that no provision is being made to extend the telephone trunk line between Adelaide and Perth. The line between Adelaide and Brisbane is already in operation. Such a service is of great value to the commercial community. I hope, therefore, that steps will be taken at once to connect Perth with the eastern States.

Senator Sir William Glasgow - I am. unable to tell the honorable senator if or when it is proposed to carry out that work, but I shall ascertain, and let him know.
