Senator NEEDHAM (WESTERN AUSTRALIA) asked the Leader of the Government in the Senate, upon notice -

1.   Is it a fact that Dr. Page, during the last Federal election campaign, stated that the National Government, if returned to power, would go into the question of the advisability of forming New States to aid the country development.

2.   Does the Government intend to proceed with such a course.

3.   If so, when and why?

Senator Sir WILLIAMGLASGOW.The policy of the Government was fully stated in the policy speeches during the election. At present a Royal Commission is enquiring into the constitutional powers of the Commonwealth, and into the working of the Constitution. Amongst other matters it is to examine the question of New States from a constitutional view point.
