Senator McLACHLAN (SOUTH AUSTRALIA) (Honorary Minister) - On the 30th September, 1927, Senator Herbert Hays asked the Minister representing the Postmaster-General the following questions : -

1.   Is it a fact, that recently tenders were received by the department for the supply of 120,000 arms for telegraph poles, among which was one from Tasmania at 7½d. per arm less than one from a Western Australian firm, and that the latter tender was accepted.

2.   If so, what is the explanation?

The following information has been received in reply to the honorable senator's questions : -

1.   Yes.

2.   The explanation is due to the difference in class of the timber from the point of view of suitability for our special work. The lower tender was for gtringybark, whilst the accepted tender was for jarrah.
