Senator NEEDHAM asked the Minister for Markets and Migration, upon notice -

1.   What is the amount of money expended by the Commonwealth per annum in connexion with the bringing of assisted immigrants to Australia, showing - (a) Free passage money grants, (b) loans of passage and landing money (recoverable from migrants) for the year 1920 to 1927?

2.   How much of the total amount loaned to these migrants has been repaid to the Commonwealth ?


Senator CRAWFORD - The answers to the honorable senator's questions are as follows: -

1.   The following is a statement of the amounts expended by the Commonwealth during the period 1920 to 1927 (30th June) in connexion with the introduction of assisted migrants, showing (a) free passage money grants, and (b) loans of passage money, landing money, and medical fees: -

 

2.   The total amount of loons repaid to the Commonwealth by migrants to the 20th June, 1927, is £206,90B.
