Senator PAYNE (through Senator J. B. Hayes) asked the Minister representing the Prime Minister, upon notice -

1.   Have representations been made at any time by the Administrator of New Guinea for increased financial assistance for extension of medical aid and services for the natives of the territory?

2.   If so, will the necessary provision be made this year?

Senator Sir WILLIAMGLASGOW.The answers to the honorable senator's questions are as follows: -

1.   No request has been received from the Administrator for increased financial assistance for the purpose mentioned since the inception of the annual grant by the Commonwealth Government for the betterment of the natives of New Guinea.

2.   A special grant of £10,000 per annum is made by the Commonwealth Government to the New Guinea Administration, to be expended solely for the direct benefit of the natives. A substantial proportion of this grant is allocated to the provision of medical aid and services for the natives, in addition to moneys which are made available for the same purpose from the local revenues of the Territory. The first payment of the grant was made in respect of the year 1925-1926.
