Senator PEARCE - As honorable senators are aware, the Government was hopeful of being able to constitute a select committee representative of both Houses of Parliament, and also of all parties in Parliament, to consider proposed amendments of the Constitution. Unfortunately, an agreement between all parties could not be reached. The Opposition, in particular, objected to the manner in which the Government's proposal had been put forward, and, owing to the pressure of business in both Houses, it has since been impossible for Ministers to get together to reconsider the position and decide what their future course should be. Immediately after the rising of Parliament the matter will be reconsidered in the light of the situation that now exists, and further action will then be taken.
