Senator J B HAYES asked the Min ister for Home and Territories, upon notice -

1.   If he has seen a press report to the effect that 3,000,000 feet of timber have been imported for house building by the Canberra om mission?

2.   If the report is true, whyis Australian timber not used?

Senator Sir WILLIAM GLASGOW - The answers to the honorable senator's questions are as follow : - 1.Yes.

2.   Preference is not being given to imported timber as against Australian timber. The Federal Capital Commission has established a policy of first preference to Australian materials, and this policy is observed in allcases. In building construction, hardwood is being used by the Commission as extensively as possible. It is well known that some soft woods must beused in all first class building construction if the best results are to be obtained. There is no adequate supply of suitable Australian soft woods on the market, and it is consequently necessaryto import supplies.
