Senator McHUGH (SOUTH AUSTRALIA) - Which line was the first to reduce freights?

Senator THOMPSON - The Shipping Combine.

Senator McHUGH - No. The Commonwealth Line first reduced them

Senator THOMPSON - It has not the slightest influence on freights.

Senator Needham - It ha3 a considerable influence in that direction.

Senator THOMPSON - In my opinion, it exerts no influence whatever.

It appears to me that the fears expressed regarding the film sought to be produced in Australia, founded on Marcus Clarke's celebrated nov.el For the Term of Eis Natural Life are groundless. I do not think that such a picture would be inimical to the best interests of Australia.

Senator Needham - The author spoke the truth, at any rate.

Senator THOMPSON - Yes, and the book in no way reflects upon Australia. If it reflects upon any country - and undoubtedly it does - it is upon the Mother Country and the conditions that existed during the period dealt with.
