Senator THOMPSON (Queensland) . - The fact that) up to the present, flow oil has not been discovered in Australia, is a good reason why we should offer every encouragement to companies that are prepared to experiment in the production of oil from our shale deposits or other sources. I hope that the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research will be instructed to make a careful inquiry into the possibility of producing oil from our coal deposits. This is being done in Germany, though not as yet on a commercial basis. We have enormous deposits of coal, if only we can devise the right system for the extraction of oil from it.

Senator H Hays - The Broken Hill Proprietary Limited is experimenting.

Senator THOMPSON - We have the largest supplies of coal in Queensland, ranging in quality from what might be called brown lignite to semi-anthracite coal; and if we can only evolve the right system for the extraction of oil from coal, on a commercial basis, we shall be absolutely independent of the foreign oil companies. This problem might well be regarded as one of the most important that could be submitted to the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, and I hope that something will be done in that direction without delay.
