The TEMPORARY CHAIRMAN (Senator Findley (VICTORIA) - It would be impossible to accept a request in the form suggested. The honorable senator should move a request that a specific item be reduced by a certain amount, and add, though not as part of his motion, his reasons for doing so.

Senator GRANT - In view of a desire to expedite the passage of the bill, I intend to waive my right in the matter. I desire to know whether anything is being done by the Government to expedite the construction of the railway from Canberra to Yass Junction?

Senator Pearce - How can we expedite a work that has not been commenced ?

Senator GRANT - I understood that it had to be done by the New South Wales Government; but, for some reason or other, it has not been carried out. It is unfair that such a small work should have been hung up for 25 years.
