Senator McLACHLAN (South Australia) . - I move -

That the House of Representatives be re- quested to amend sub-item (a) by leaving out the word " Locomotives " in paragraph 2 and inserting it after the word "Engines " in paragraph 1.

This paragraph as it at present stands applies to locomotives required by State Governments. A very striking illustration of the way in which it would operate is furnished by developments that have recently taken place in South Australia. The Railways Commissioner there, a progressive officer, determined upon an improvement of the railway system, and, to that end, with the- sanction of the government of the day, embarked on a developmental policy that will cost that State something like £5,000,000. Of that amount, £3,500,000 will be spent in Australia, and the balance in buying various equipment, some of which is not available here and some of which is available, but at prices far in advance of what is thought to be reasonable.

Progress reported.
