Senator WILSON (South Australia) . - I, personally, tried to obtain a reduction of the duty in the three columns; but the Senate" decided to make an effort to reduce the duty on British lines only. Australia should be able to compete successfully with other countries with a preference of 25 per cent. The Committee would not be justified, after the lengthy and mature consideration given to this, item, in lightly accepting the decision of the other House. A division should certainly be taken. I hope that the duty previously decided on by the Senate will be adhered to.


Senator Gardiner - If we are to have a conference with another place, it is well to have the Empire behind us.
