Senator E D MILLEN (NEW SOUTH WALES) - The answers are : -

1.   No. It has been , decided, however, . to sell the trading assets of the four large German companies in the Territory, viz., the New Guinea Company, H.S.A.G., Hernsheim and Company, and Norddeutscher Lloyd, and the necessary data are now being collected with a view to inviting tenders throughout the Commonwealth for the purchase of the trading concerns.

2.   Applications have been received from returned soldiers and others for permission to obtain mining and timber concessions, but in every case the applicant has been informed that permission cannot be granted until the policy of the Government has been announced and the necessary Ordinances issued. 3 and 4. No. No such permission has been granted by this Department. It is understood that a representative of the Rabaul Prospecting and Exploration Company proceeded to the Territory and applied for timber rights, also mineral and oil rights; but no rights of any sort have been granted to him.
