Senator PEARCE (Western AustraliaMinister for Defence) (2:48 AM) . - I move -

That the House of Representatives be requested to amend sub-item (b) to make the duties " on and after 1st January, 1922, ad val., British, 15 per cent.; intermediate, 20 per cent.; general, 25 per cent."

The effect of the amendment will be to bring aluminium wire into line with the other forms of aluminium indicated in sub-item a. There is no reason for difference in the rates. Aluminium wire isa partly manufactured form in itself. It is not generally used as a wire, however, but as the partly manufactured material for making completed forms of aluminium ware.

Request agreed to.

Medicines -

And on and after 22nd June, 1921 -

(a)   Pharmaceutical preparations, patent and proprietary medicines and drugs, and other medicinal preparations; medicinal extracts, essences, juices, infusions, solutions, emulsions, confections, syrups, pills, pilules, tabloids, soloids, ovoids, tablets, capsules, cachets, suppositories, pessaries n.e.i., poultices, salves, cerates, ointments, liniments, lotions, pastes and the like, medicinal waters and compounded medicinal oils, medicines for animals, ad val., British, 25 per cent.; intermediate, 30 per cent.; general, 35 per cent.

(b)   Spirituous, ad val., British, 25 per cent.; intermediate, 30 per cent.; general, 35 per cent.; (or according to the rates provided in item 9, whichever rate returns the higher duty. )

(c)   Medicines and other preparations included in sub-items (a) and (b), and not being similar to the medicines and other preparations made in the Commonwealth, as prescribed by departmental by-laws, ad val., British, 15 per cent.; intermediate, 20 per cent.; general, 25 per cent.; (or when spirituous according to the rates provided in item 9, whichever rate returns the higher duty.)
