Senator WILSON (South Australia) . - If I had any doubt as to how I should vote upon this matter, Senator Payne's last utterance would have caused me to vote in favour of retaining the rate of duty which the honorable senator seeks to reduce. He tells us that he is of opinion that the Australian article, though it may be a little dearer, is of better quality than the imparted. It is economical for the Australian people to pay a litle more for better quality, and when we know that the Australian rubber shoe, from the point of appearance, wear, and finish, compares more than favorably with the imported shoe, there is no necessity for a young country to import what can be made better by its own workmen.
