Senator DUNCAN (New South Wales) . - When I submitted my request for a reduction in the general duty, I had an idea that the position as regards im: portations might be as has been stated by the Minister for Defence (Senator Pearce). I am udt at all desirous of giving encouragement to Japan. The greater proportion of the goods received from that country during the war were practically an imposition on the public, being of poor quality, cheap and nasty. If, as has been stated by the Minister, the great bulk of the importations under this heading are coining from Japan, the only thing I would like to do* would be to increase the general duty from 50 to 100 per cent. With the permission of the Committee I should like to withdraw my request.

Bequest, by leave, withdrawn.
