Senator PEARCE (Western Australia) (Minister for Defence) . - This item includes deferred duties of 20 per cent. British, 25 per cent. intermediate, and 35 per cent. general, on and after 1st January, 1922. At present, the effective duty is 10 per cent. There is a proposal before the Customs Department to commence the manufacture of these articles at Collingwood, Victoria, but the deferred duties will not become operative until it can be demonstrated that the industry is on a sound commercial basis, and capable of supplying articles in sufficient quantity to meet reasonable requirements.
