Senator PAYNE (Tasmania) . - I have heard nothing to justify such an increase as is proposed for the protection of the manufacturers of these commodities.

Senator Vardon - They are asking for more.

Senator PAYNE - Probably they are; but we have to consider whether it is reasonable to grant the proposed substantial addition. "Under the former duties the industry got on very well.

Senator Senior - Because the raw material was admitted free.

Senator PAYNE - That point has been referred to by Senator E. D. Millen. We have been reminded time after time of the duty of 21/2 per cent. on pig iron, which is the base of the metal industry, and now we have a proposal for a 10 per cent. increase on this item. To bo consistent, I shall have to persist with my request for a reduction of 5 per cent., because I regard the proposed additional duty as heavier than is required for the protection of this local industry.

Request negatived.
