Senator PAYNE (Tasmania) . - I desire information concerning the position of the wire-netting and barbedwire industry in Australia prior to the establishment of the works at Newcastle. If there are numbers of smaller concerns turning out barbed wire and wire netting, care should be taken that if the duties upon the finished articles are reduced, there shall be corresponding reductions of duty upon the raw materials.

Senator Russell - I have already furnished the Committee with, the names and other particulars of several firms actively engaged in different States.

Senator PAYNE - Have they been depending upon raw material from Great Britain!

Senator Russell - No; they have been using locally drawn wire.

Senator PAYNE - I am glad to learn that other establishments beside our penal settlements have been engaged in the production of barbed wire and wire netting.
