Senator ELLIOTT (Victoria) .- Whilst I am willing to support the request submitted by the Minister (Senator Russell) for deferred duties on aluminium goods, I am somewhat apprehensive that the local factory may' not be in a position to begin supplying Australian requirements for these goods on the 1st January next. I foresee that during the next few months there may be a very great deal of activity on the part of American and German manufacturers to load up our market with supplies inanticipation of the heavy duties which it is proposed shall come into operation on the 1st January, 1922. In the circumstances, I intend to submit a request for the immediate imposition of duties of 5 and 15 per cent. in the intermediate and general columns respectively upon importations under sub-item a. In order that I may do so, it is necessary that the Minister should temporarily withdraw his request.

Senator Russell - I ask leave to withdraw my request, temporarily.

Request, by leave, withdrawn.

Request (by Senator Elliott) proposed -

That the House of Representatives be requested to make the duties, sub-item a, intermediate, 5 per cent.; general, 15 per cent.
