Senator GARDINER (New South Wales) .- I move-

That the House of Representatives be requested to amend sub-item (a) by leaving out the words " as prescribed by departmental bylaws."

In view of the principles Ihold, I cannot permit an item, to pass that contains these words.

Senator PRATTEN (NEW SOUTH WALES) - Why not let it go till to-morrow?

Senator GARDINER - Because I have no faith in the promise of the Minister. He will simply say that he has given the matter consideration, and that he thinks it advisable to let it stand. I want it on record that I proposed the rejection of the principle, and that Senator Pratten and other honorable senators did not support me.

Request negatived.
