Senator LYNCH (Western Australia) . - It is quite clear that by retaining the British rate of 2d. unaltered no preference will be given over the intermediate* rate. I think the Government ought to take steps to establish a preferential rate for British articles, but' in order to save them the trouble of doing: so, and because of the assistance they have afforded me. in my endeavour to turn out a Tariff creditable to the Senate, I move -

That the House of Representatives be re- quested to make the duty, sub-item (a), per l b., British,1½d.
