Senator PEARCE (Western Australia) (Minister for Defence) . - Mutinies have occurred on transports at intermediate ports of call, where men have organized in open force and deserted, thus avoiding going to the war. These men may not yet have returned to Australia, but when they do it might be desirable to have the power to punish them. It is certainly not possible to punish such an act of mutiny at the time. It may not be possible to do it until some time after the general body of the troops have returned from the war.
