Senator GARDINER (NEW SOUTH WALES) (Vice-President of the Executive Council) - The answers are -

1.   It is understood that Dr. Ernst-Carroll, nt present acting as Commonwealth Trade Commissioner in Switzerland, was at one time resident in Tasmania, where fie was known as Dr. Ernst. While there he married a resident of that State, named Miss Carroll, after which he took the name of Ernst-Carroll.

2.   (a), Disseminate information regarding Australia; (8) stimulate trade between Australia and Switzerland; (c) extend courtesies and facilities to Australians visiting Switzerland; (d) act generally under instructions from the High Commissioner. Dr. Carroll was employed under an agreement requiring twelve months' notice of termination. Notice of termination was given on the 14th June, 1915.
