Senator BAKHAP (TASMANIA) - Is it correct that the Imperial Government have, within the last day or two, cabled to the effect that every fit man, fully equipped or otherwise, that Australia can send forward is needed, and will be welcomed ?

Senator PEARCE - The Government have received a cablegram that every man is wanted. In reply to certain messages in regard to equipment a further intimation has been made to us that every man is wanted, equipped or otherwise.

Senator BAKHAP - Arising out of the reply, is it the intention of the Minister or of the Government to continue the present system of recruiting known as the voluntary system, which is one of cajolery or allurement, or are they going to adopt a co-ordinated plan of compulsory service in this great emergency?

Senator PEARCE - The Government do not propose to adopt compulsory service at present.
