Senator STORY (SOUTH AUSTRALIA) - Some little time ago, I drew the attention of the Minister of Defence to a statement made by Mr. McGregor, in Adelaide, that the military contracts were being carried out by the scum of the earth, and the Minister undertook to investigate the matter.' I desire to know whether an investigation has been made, and, if so, with what result ?

Senator PEARCE - The press report of that statement, which was furnished by the honorable senator, has been sent on to the Attorney-General for advice.

Senator ALBERT GOULD (NEW SOUTH WALES) -Colonel Sir ALBERTGOULD.- Can the Minister of Defence tell me how many troops have been sent from Australia in the Expeditionary Forces, and also how many men arein training for similar purposes?

Senator PEARCE - The number of men who had been trained up to the date of the last return I saw was 83,000.

Senator ALBERT GOULD (NEW SOUTH WALES) -Colonel Sir AlbertGould. - Can the Minister tell me how many men have been sent away?

Senator PEARCE - I cannot say from memory; but if the honorable senator will give notice of a question, I will furnish the information on the next day of sitting.
