Senator KEATING (TASMANIA) asked the Minister of Defence, upon notice -

Relative to his announcement to the Senate on 11th December last {Hansard. p. 1588), regarding the purchase of horses for his Department in Tasmania, that " the serious charges which have been made by Senator Ready will be investigated " : -

1.   Has such investigation been made?

2.   What was its nature?

3.   What was its result?

4.   Will lie make the papers in connexion therewith available to the Senate?

Senator PEARCE - The answers are : -

1.   Yes.

2.   The Military Commandant was furnished with a copy of the charges made by Senator Beady, and requested to report thereon, and to furnish head-quarters with the original documents, giving particulars of all horses purchased by the Board of which Mr. Piesse was a member.

3.   The Commandant's report shows that the purchase of horses in Tasmania was conducted in a satisfactory manner, there being only five rejections out of a total of 186 horses purchased, 17.1 of which were required for the first force and had to be obtained with the utmost despatch.

4.   The pupers in connexion with this matter will be placed on the Library table.
