Senator McCOLL - I have been furnished with the following answers to the honorable senator's questions : -

1.   Two schooners, viz., Forbes Brothers and Alcairo, have been purchased. One vessel will " stand by," and be used by the men working on reefs; the other will be engaged in carrying sand, stone, cement, materials, &c., from Cook town to the scene of operations.

2.   The Director of Lighthouses advised and recommended the purchase of these vessels.

3.   Steamers would have been very much more expensive, as to upkeep, and are quite unnecessary for doing this work.

4.   Tenders close on 12th August for the construction of three lighthouse steamers. Even if the steamers were available now, both the schooners would have been purchased.
