Senator GUTHRIE - Is the Minister of Defence prepared to consider a proposal to deprive military officers of the power to fine or imprison cadets in connexion with their military services after they leave the hands of the civil magistrates 1

Senator MILLEN - I had that question under my notice, and also a further suggestion as to whether it might not be expedient to provide that before solitary confinement could be ordered in any case, the matter should be referred to headquarters - that is, to the Minister himself.

Senator Rae - While you are considering that, would i£ not be a fair thing to let the lad out?

Senator MILLEN - I should think he was out by now.
